Celebrating Title IX, 50 Years to the Day

The anniversary event on Thursday will include information about campus resources.

A celebration marking the 50th anniversary of Title IX is set for Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at Parkhurst Hall, rain or shine.

The event, sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, will feature a resource fair and cupcakes.

Title IX was signed into law on June 23, 1972. It protects people from discrimination based on sex in educational programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.

"Passing Title IX of the Education Amendments Act in 1972 was a watershed moment establishing gender equity in education," says Kristi Clemens, assistant vice president of equity and compliance and Title IX coordinator. "No one could have adequately predicted the wide-ranging impact this would have on the past 50 years of education in the United States, and here at Dartmouth I am proud to celebrate this anniversary with our community."

The fair will include information about Dick's House, the Sexual Assault Peer Alliance, the Student and Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault, the Student Wellness Center, and WISE, a Lebanon N.H.-based nonprofit that works to end gender-based violence.
